The Round – Whitehorse Performing Arts Centre
Client: Kane Constructions
Project Size: 350T
Apex Welding & Steel Fabrication played a pivotal role in delivering the high quality construction project, working closely with Kane Constructions, project engineers, temporary engineers, architects, and other subcontractors.
The intricate structural steel package, weighing in at 350 tonnes, required meticulous coordination to manage installation and access, predominantly utilising Australian steel.
A key aspect of the project was the construction of the fly tower, which necessitated the installation of over 30 tonnes of structural steel on a temporary 22-metre-high birdcage scaffold. Precast panels were then installed around the steel framework, with the structure and internal fit-out sequenced from the top down.
The theatre trusses were particularly challenging, measuring up to 5.7 metres in height, 22 metres in length, and weighing 8 tonnes.
The building, aptly named “The Round” due to its curved walls, ceilings, and roofs, also utilised structural and lightweight steel framing.
This innovative combination of design and engineering ensured the project’s successful completion, underscoring the critical role of steel fabrication and installation in contemporary construction projects.
